What if a major medical center and health system decided it was time to make a commitment to an "ideal" system of primary care? What would it look like? What would the PCP panel size look like? How many patients would be seen each day? How long would visit appointments be? What other means of care coordination and communication with patients would be present? Who are the primary care team members? How and how much would primary care physicians be compensated? How would they relate to the health system?
When the Eisenhower Medical Center board of directors made just such a commitment and brought in Dr. Joseph Scherger to make "Ideal Primary Care" a reality, these were among the questions he had to address. The most highly rated speaker from the National Medical Home Summit turns his considerable intellectual and communication skills to this challenge as he describes a stunning commitment by a major health care player and how it will play out.
Dr. Scherger's main focus has been on the redesign of office practice using the tools of information technology and quality improvement. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1992 and was recognized as a "Top Doc" in San Diego for six consecutive years from 2004-2009. He is a Clinical Professor of Family & Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (UCSD) and also serves as Medical Director for Quality and Informatics at Lumetra.
